Christopher Broderick

Research Fellow

Dr. Broderick is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Photonics Theory Group. He received B.Sc. (Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from University College Cork in 2010 and 2015, respectively. His doctoral research focused on developing the theory of highly-mismatched III-V dilute bismide semiconductor alloys, including the design and optimisation of GaAs- and InP-based near- and mid-infrared semiconductor lasers based on these materials. This work was supported by an EMBARK Postgraduate Scholarship from the Irish Research Council.

Dr. Broderick’s current research centres on direct-gap (Si,Ge)(C,Sn,Pb) group-IV alloys, and encompasses developing the theory of their electronic structure, in addition to determining the consequences of their electronic structure for applications in photonic, electronic and photovoltaic devices. This work is supported by a National University of Ireland Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Sciences.

Generally, Dr. Broderick’s research interests are in the theory and simulation of new classes of semiconductor materials, with a view to informing the development of next generation semiconductor devices. This work encompasses fundamental materials theory, as well as the development of multi-scale methods and software to enable quantitative prediction and in silico design and optimisation of the properties and performance of emerging materials for device applications.
