Abi Waqas joined IPIC as a SPARKLE Marie Curie fellow to work on a novel integrated photonic delay line. He is also an assistant professor (on leave) in the Telecommunication Department of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. He is serving as Chair of the Technical Chapter of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, Karachi Section R10 Region.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering jointly from Aalborg University, Denmark, and MUET. He completed his PhD in Information Technology from Politecnico di Milano in Italy, where he also served as a visiting faculty member. His academic journey was enriched by receiving the prestigious Erasmus Grants for his bachelor’s and PhD studies in Europe.
He has made significant contributions to the field of IT and has been recognized for his research work. For a few years, he has worked for ENI PAKISTAN as Network Analyst. His research interests include integrated photonics, optical phased arrays for 5G applications, statistical methods, and computer and wireless networking. He has published his research findings in prestigious journals and conference proceedings. In fact, he was awarded the best paper award at a highly reputable IEEE conference. He serves as a reviewer for numerous top-notch journals and conferences in the field of IT.
He has secured significant national and international funding, totaling 15 million Pakistani rupees, to support his research endeavors in Pakistan and abroad. He has been involved in many national and international funded projects. Some notable projects include Erasmus+ KA171, which has a budget of €240,000 and the Erasmus+ Capacity Building project, which has received approximately €2.4 million in funding. These projects will contribute to the advancement of higher education and research activities, further showcasing his dedication to promoting academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
He has been invited as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Additionally, he has been awarded the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), one of the most prestigious fellowships in Europe for research in photonics.
